![]() I would recommend it and say it is worth the read. I read this on a whim almost, and found myself enthralled with Uzumaki and it’s story. The truth, the ending, and all things that happen in the manga are just great. The art was perfect, the story was interesting, and even the characters were interesting. As she walks to the train station one day to meet her boyfriend, Shuuichi Saito, she sees his father staring at a snail shell in an alley. In the town of Kurouzu-cho, Kirie Goshima lives a fairly normal life with her family. It isn’t bad enough to take away from the manga, but it could have been better in that respect. Sadly the manga begins to lose some appeal because it is not convincing enough to draw you in per se, it seems sort of fake at times. The manga mainly followed one character, but also the one’s who became obsessed. ![]() I mean c’mon a manga where people become obsessed with spirals? What’s the appeal? This anime becomes terrifying, and the art (which is perfect in so many ways) makes it a horrific and intense experince. I began reading it with no real expectations. I will not be going into complete detail on the story, or the characters, but will review points in a more general sense. I read this a LONG time ago, but it is always fresh in my mind. If you’re into horror manga, I highly recommend it. Uzumaki Reviews:Īs much as it spooked and grossed me out, I couldn’t put it down. Earthbound begins, as many of Ito’s short stories do, with a phenomenon. While many of his stories rely on cosmic horror or body horror, this one is more of a slow, creeping dread. For any teen looking for horror in formats other than movies, I would highly recommend anything by Ito. Found in the Smashed short story collection, Earthbound is a Junji Ito manga that really leans on the eeriness factor. This means spiral shapes begin to appear everywhere: blades of grass, clouds, pottery. A small Japanese town is infested by spirals. The story follows what must seem like a bizarre, absurd premise even by the standards of weird fiction. Each chapter draws the reader into the madness that the main characters and eventually the whole town experiences. After reading Uzumaki in its entirety, I can assure readers that this status is rightfully deserved. There aren’t any sexual instances but a woman is drawn naked in one of the chapters. There are no real language issues, but the illustrations and content are extremely graphic, especially for black and white illustrations. This manga is very dark and most definitely for older teens and adults. But his father’s obsession with the shape soon proves deadly, beginning a chain of horrific and unexplainable events that causes the residents of Kurouzu-cho to spiral into madness. Shuuichi reveals his rising desire to leave the town with Kirie, saying that the town is infected with spirals. Kirie and Shuichi start to notice a strange pattern, spirals, cropping up everywhere and causing individuals and even natural weather events to act strangely. If Junji Ito ever drew SpongeBob into his spiral horror manga Uzumaki, this creepy illustration might be what readers could expect to see. The whole tome is broken into chapters that follow Kirie Goshima, her boyfriend, Shuichi Saito, and at times her family, as their small town in Japan slowly “spirals” out of control. SpongeBob looks a little disturbingly dizzying in a new illustration that references one of the works of the acclaimed horror creator Junji Ito. Ito’s Uzumaki: Spiral Into Horror is a classic horror manga for older teens and adults.
